Lehigh day care ordered closed after infant death

A Lehigh Township day care has been ordered closed by the state Department of Human Services following the death of a 3-month-old child entrusted to its care.

According to reports, McKenna Rose Felmly was put down for a nap by a staffer at Sharon’s Day Care, Treichlers, and left alone while the staffer attended to other children. Twenty-five minutes later, the staffer returned to find the baby unresponsive.

The child was rushed to the hospital, but it was too late.

According to the emergency order issued April 14, it was stated the staffer should have stayed with the infant instead of attending to other children. McKenna was left unattended several times throughout the day and was placed on her stomach for her nap.

The state order found there was “gross incompetence, negligence and misconduct” at the day care, presenting an “immediate and serious danger to the life or health of children in care.”

Sharon Lynn Balek, who owns the day care, declined to discuss the order.

“I have no comment,” she said when contacted, after which she hung up.

McKenna was the daughter of Adrienne L. Kromer and Bryan S. Felmly, of Slatington. She was in her first day of day care.

A GoFundMe page set up by Felmly has raised more than $16,000.

“Our sweet little princess never learned to walk, but she now has wings,” wrote McKenna’s father.
