Philatelist wonders where headlines are on rate decrease

To the Editor:

As a postage stamp collector since a lad growing up in Schnecksville in the 1940s, it was a hobby that was very inexpensive since canceled stamps cost nothing and many of my Evening Chronicle Newspaper subscribers knew I collected and many saved stamps for me.

My uncle, William Henry Harrison Clauser, bought me a stamp album as a birthday gift in 1941 and I added to the albums as my collection grew.

As of yesterday, April 11, the first class 1 ounce rate came down to 47 cents and the second ounce rate dropped to 21 cents, a lowering of 1 cent.

Also the postcardsrate dropped from 35 cents to 34 cents, but did I see any notice in a newspaper?

The rate change reverses the January 2014 emergency increase of 4.3 percent.

The Postal Regulatory Commission allowed the USPS to raise rates based on financial hardships from the Great Recession of 2008-09.

The increase was temporary -- limited by a cap of some $4.6 billion in extra revenue.

Usually when anything goes up in price, there are screaming headlines but ne’er a whisper concerning the decrease!

I thought at least the Parkland Press would let all of its subscribers know about the decrease in U.S. postal rates.
