A strong showing for Moravian College art faculty

The work in The Biennial Moravian College Faculty Show, continuing through April 17 in the Payne Gallery, is as impressive as it is varied.

Among Art Department faculty members exhibiting: Natessa Amin, Josh Azzsarella, Kristin Baxter, Jan Ciganick, Ted Colegrove, Renzo Faggioli, Angela Fraleigh, Jeff Hurwitz, Kristine Kotsch, Elizabeth Krenos, Ashley Kuhn, Camille Murphy, Luke Wynne and Doug Zucco.

Among the many vibrant works are those of Kotsch, whose series, “As The Crow Flies,” is a series of images assembled digitally and printed on archival paper. The 11 archival pigment prints depict found objects (an hourglass, a nest, eggs and, of course, crows, and so forth). The series utilizes “the crow as a metaphor for our personal journey,” states the artist. The work is startling and thought-provoking.

Zucco’s “Eight Days A Week” series includes eight images and one image containing all eight. These are monoprint solarplate on hand-made paper. Two toothbrushes in a ceramic cup in different positions comprise the series. “It’s an acknowledgement of my appreciation to my wife Helene,” the artist states.

Murphy’s work is that of a creative director and designer. “I am a problem-solver,” is included in the artist’s statement. Images for a Sony Open House, Nickelodeon Nick Jr., Marvel Comics and Penguin Books are included, where Murphy’s capacities included that of creative director, art director and graphic designer.

“The Moravian College Art Department cultivates a vibrant academic community committed to creative and critical thinking,” said Professor Angela Fraleigh, chair of the Art Department, in a press release statement. “The program focuses on promoting invention, research and curiosity to construct new knowledge, foster self-expression, and explore visual communication.

“The faculty ensures that students are provided with a strong, personalized academic major, combined with innovative hands-on learning experiences and opportunities for community engagement and collaboration,” Fraleigh continued.

“The department is committed to providing professional opportunities through internships, in-house graphic design studio, student teaching, on- and off- campus student exhibitions, visiting guest lectures, study abroad experiences, student-run organizations, and participation in conferences, workshops and presentations.”

Next up in the Payne Gallery: The Moravian College Senior Thesis Exhibition, April 21 to May 14, spotlights four years of work for graduating senior art majors. The closing reception for the Senior Thesis Exhibition, 2 to 4 p.m. May 14, marks the conclusion of the 2015-16 academic year.

Payne Gallery is on the Priscilla Payne Hurd Campus of Moravian College at Main and Church streets in downtown Bethlehem. Gallery hours are noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. The gallery is closed Mondays, major holidays and during school breaks. Admission and parking are free. The Gallery is wheelchair accessible.
