Memorial committee selling bricks honoring veterans

Whitehall Township Veterans Memorial Committee has kicked off a project of paying homage to family members or friends who served in the military.

Families and individuals are able to purchase an engraved brick that will be placed at the proposed veterans memorial site in front of the township municipal building on MacArthur Road.

A large number of residents have already registered to purchase one or more bricks. The committee, during its meeting March 2 at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post, Egypt, set $60 as the price for each.

Also at the meeting, the committee agreed on the final design and wording on the granite stone. The granite will be gray, and a gold star will be at the top of the monument with a black trim. The wording will state, β€œIn Memory And Honor Of All Who Served Our Country.”

Contributions prior to the meeting tallied $3,200. Among the contributors are Eberhardt Motors, American Legion Post 739, Lehigh Valley Chapter of Nam Knights Motorcycle Club, American Legion posts in Hokendauqua and Fullerton, Veterans of Foreign Wars in Egypt and several families and individuals.

The cost of the veterans memorial is estimated at $50,000.

Gilbert Funeral Home, Fullerton, will pay for a new flagpole. A gazebo has previously been donated.

Construction at the site could begin later this year or early 2017. Dedication of the veterans memorial is planned for Memorial Day 2017.

Applications to purchase a brick are available at American Legion posts in Hokendauqua and Fullerton, Veterans of Foreign Wars in Egypt, Coplay-Whitehall Sewer Authority office and Whitehall Township Municipal Building.
