State champion Hawks return all starters

Bethlehem Catholic High School’s softball team is back, almost in its entirety, for the 2016 season.

“Everybody who started in the state final is back,” said Becahi coach Rich Mazza. “Yes, it’s really nice. Last year we kind of sneaked up on people.”

The Hawks will not be sneaking up on anyone this year, especially as defending state champions.

“There is some luck in winning a state championship, and things have to fall into place,” Mazza said, “but we have a pretty nice team, and I would expect to do well.”

Elyse Cuttic will return to pitch, and Courtney Shupp will catch. Both are seniors who nursed serious injuries most of last season.

“Courtney took some extra precautions, working on her leg, way above and beyond the call of duty,” said Mazza. “Elyse has done a lot to get herself ready to go.”

Julia Siedz will play first base, Angelys Cotto will be at second base, Jess Indelicato will return as shortstop, and Bethanne Brandstetter will be at third base.

Outfielders for the Hawks will be Tash Miner, Maddie Ensley, and Brooke Rau.

“We only have 12 on varsity, but all of them will play an important role,” Mazza said.

Morgan Christine will be Becahi’s designated player, Lexi Panuccio will do some pitching, and freshman, Alyssa Jiminez, will play some outfield.

“We’re swinging the bat well, we have good leadership so far, and things are falling into place,” said Mazza. “Like we tell the girls, nobody’s going to lay down for you.”

Chris Povinsky has joined the coaching staff, replacing Chuck Billy. Bob Breitfeller is back to coach the outfielders, and Marci Siedz will assist with hitting.

“Freedom has real nice players, and Liberty has a lot of people back,” said Mazza, regarding the upcoming season. “Easton has their team back, and Parkland is always good.”

Becahi will travel to Northampton on Thursday, a game which is expected to be just as competitive.

“They have two good pitchers, and they throw hard,” Mazza said. “It should be a good game.”
