Steelstacks
The Lehigh Valley Charter Arts High School Jazz Band, directed by Mike Lorenz, is among six high school jazz bands in the 2016 “SteelStacks High School Jazz Band Showcase” finals, 4 p.m. March 20, Musikfest Café, ArtsQuest Center, SteelStacks, 101 Founders Way, Bethlehem.
The other five finalists are: Easton Area High School Jazz Band, directed by Carole Lutte; Delaware Valley Regional High School Jazz Band, directed by Chris Zwarych; North Penn High School Navy Band, directed by David DiValentino; Phillipsburg High School Jazz Band, directed by Kyle Fleming, and Quakertown Community High School Jazz Band, directed by Frank Parker.
The winning group receives a master class with saxophonist and RiverJazz headliner Jessy J and opens his May 12 concert.
During the finals, each band performs a 20-minute set before the audience and judges. The event includes a performance by the Moravian College Jazz Faculty Band and an awards presentation for the competition’s top soloists and sections.
The showcase and finals will be telecast at 9 p.m. April 2 on 69-WFMZ-TV.
Sixteen school bands from Pennsylvania and New Jersey were in the Feb. 14 and 21 preliminary rounds of the 2016 “SteelStacks High School Jazz Band Showcase,” presented by King, Spry, Herman, Freund & Faul, LLC.
