Gunning, Fenstermacher golden again
KJ Fenstermacher is on a roll and he hopes his streak of two straight gold medals can extend one final weekend of the wrestling season.
Fenstermacher (120) won the Northeast Regional AAA crown on Saturday following a 3-0 decision over Northampton’s Dan Moran, making it two straight weeks he’s topped his longtime rival.
Rivalries aside, Fenstermacher (38-1), alongside teammate Andrew Gunning (HWT), are proving that they are contenders for this week’s PIAA tournament in Hershey, as both enter the tournament as regional champions, riding waves of momentum.
“I feel like I keep pushing the pace and I’m not even really getting tired,” said Fenstermacher of his current form. “I think I’m wrestling phenomenal, but nothing really matters until next weekend.”
The same could be said for Gunning (38-0), who kept his undefeated mark going with a 9-3 decision over LaSalle’s Vincenzo Pelusi in the heavyweight finals on Saturday.
Gunning was mobbed with photographs after capturing his regional crown, celebrating another ride to the state championships, but he knows that he won’t be fully satisfied unless he comes home this weekend with another gold medal in his hardware.
“I just want to keep going hard because I know I’m almost there,” Gunning said. “It’s the last step in the process, so I’m excited. I’m not really worried about who’s out there in the state, I’m just going to focus on what I need to do this week to prepare and be ready for Hershey.”
Fenstermacher was fully aware of who he needs to worry about this weekend, as Franklin Regional’s two-time state champion, Spencer Lee (8-0), is the heavy favorite to win the 120-pound weight class again.
Fenstermacher was just hoping to be seeded on the opposite bracket as his western PA counterpart, so he could get a crack at him in the finals.
Fortunately for Fenstermacher, that’s how it worked for him, as he’s at the top of the bracket and Lee sits in the bottom half.
Lee was out for the most part of the season following shoulder surgery and upped his career record to 105-0 following a 17-2 technical fall over Pine-Richland junior Hunter Baxter at the WPIAL/?Southwest AAA regional over the weekend.
“To be the best you got to beat the best,” Fenstermacher said. “I hope I can get to the finals and just throw everything I got at Lee. If not, it would be a pretty good tournament to take second, but I would really want to get to the finals.”
Liberty moves three wrestlers to the state tournament, as Luke Werner (37-8) took third at 113 with a 7-0 decision over Parkland’s Nick Dolak in the consolation round at regionals.
Freedom advanced only one wrestler to Hershey, as 220-pounder Evan Callahan took second after falling to Pleasant Valley’s Trent Thomas 3-1 in overtime during Saturday’s finals.
After winning the district title matchup over Thomas 4-3, Callahan felt he took his foot off the pedal coming into regionals.
“I think he wanted it more this week,” Callahan said of Thomas. “I didn’t prepare myself like I usually do. I didn’t go through my normal routine, but I give him credit. I’ll be ready for states.”
