Police Chief George Bruneio resigns

Borough Police Chief Todd Pantuso, who took the reins from retired Chief George Bruneio in 2012, submitted a letter of resignation to borough council Feb. 18.

Mayor Gerald Yob read the letter aloud during the March 1 meeting, and its contents were respectful, yet indicting. Pantuso said, “After some thought, I put my heart and soul into the police department and bringing it into the 21st century,” but continuous interference in the day-to-day workings of police affairs had made it increasingly difficult to perform his duty to provide protection and service to Freemansburg.

Yob said Pantuso had come in and cleaned house and accomplished a lot of good things. “I’m sorry to see Todd go.”

Pantuso did not sit in the audience for the meeting as was his custom, though he was in the building, and council accepted his resignation, which was effective March 3, 7-0.

Borough Manager Judith Danko did not respond to requests for additional information, such as how council will search for a replacement or who is now running the Freemansburg Police Department.

In other news, Freemansburg joins other commonwealth municipalities which will now – if approved – receive federal reimbursement for emergency expenses incurred during the record-setting snowstorm in January. Borough Emergency Manager John Rossi worked closely with administrator Danko to have the relevant documentation available when Harrisburg wished to compile its complete report, and Rossi said they only await President Barack Obama’s go-ahead to be rewarded 75 percent of those expenses.

Rossi estimated the borough’s cost at $8,462.
