“Once Upon a Mattress,” a musical comedy based on the fairy tale, “The Princess and the Pea,” which takes place in and around a 15th-century castle, will be staged at 7 p.m. March 9, 10, 11 and 12 and 2 p.m. March 12 and 13, auditorium, Emmaus High School, 500 Macungie Avenue, Emmaus.
Jill Kuebler, an Emmaus High School graduate and Emmaus High School English teacher in her 10th year as director, says, “It’s a family-friendly show ... fun for the audience and the cast of 34 students.” Kuebler is very familiar with the classic play, “I was Lady Larken in junior high.” Lady Larken is one of the leads.
Musical director and choreography coordinator is Rita Cortez. Orchestra conductor is Ryan Harrington. Costume coordinator is Lori Ross. Stage technician is Mike Eisentraut.
“Once Upon a Mattress” opened on Broadway in 1959, receiving two Tony nominations for best musical and best actress for Carol Burnett in her Broadway debut as Princess Winnifred. The play returned to Broadway in 1996. The music is by Mary Rodgers and lyrics are by Marshall Barer, who wrote the book with Dean Fuller and Jay Thompson. The musical was developed at Camp Tamiment in the Pocono Mountains.
Songs include “An Opening for a Princess,” “Song of Love,” “Happily Ever After” and “Man to Man Talk.”
