Moravian Academy ‘Big Fish’

The contemporary musical “Big Fish” is a good catch for the Moravian Academy theater community.

“It has a universal appeal in the parent-child relationships it examines, “ says Jarrod Yuskauskas, director of the musical, 7:30 p.m. March 4, 5 and 2 p.m. March 6, Dyer Auditorium, Moravian Academy, 4313 Green Pond Road, Bethlehem Township.

Yuskauskas, a professional actor in Lehigh Valley theater, is assisted by choreographer AlexJo Natale, music director Dr. Yvonne Robinson, technical director Rob Riker and orchestra conductor Dr. Richard Fanning.

The musical tale of family love and life itself tells the story of a small-town hero turned successful traveling salesman, Edward Bloom, who “lived life to its fullest ... and then some.”

The play focuses on the present-day joy his stories bring to everyone, especially his wife, Sandra, and their son, Will, who sees the stories in a different light and goes off on a real-life adventure of his own.

The theater adaptation, with music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa and book by John August, is based on a popular novel by Daniel Wallace, “Big Fish: A Novel of Mythic Proportions,” that was adapted for a 2003 film directed by Tim Burton. The Broadway show opened in October 2013 and closed in December 2013.

“I had the good fortune to see ‘Big Fish’ during its Broadway run,” says Yuskauskus, who has a special affinity for the popular contemporary musical.

Songs include “Be the Hero,” “Little Lamb from Alabama,’’ “Red White and True,” “Daffodils” and “Two Men in My Life.”
