‘Ladybug Girl and Bumblebee Boy, the Musical’ in Miller Symphony Hall ‘Family Series’

“Ladybug Girl and Bumblebee Boy, the Musical” is being presented at 2 p.m. Feb. 27 as part of the “Family Series” at Miller Symphony Hall, Allentown.

The show, produced by the Bay Area Children’s Theatre, is inspired by the popular picture books by David Soman and Jacky Davis. The stage version follows four friends, “The Bug Squad,” as they fight an alien.

The show, which features the comedic skills of clown Andrew Quick as Bingo, celebrates the power of imagination, and promotes a sense of adventure and exploration. The show is recommended for ages 2 and up.

“This show inspired children throughout the San Francisco Bay Area to explore creative play,” says Nina Meehan, Bay Area Children’s Theatre’s Executive Director in a phone interview. “We are excited to share the story with children on the East Coast through this tour.”

Benjamin Hanna, who directs the show, has spent the past five years mentoring young artists at the Berkeley Rep School of Theatre, Berkeley, Calif., as well as directing “Ivy and Bean, the Musical,” also for the Bay Area Children’s Theatre.

“Ladybug Girl and Bumblebee Boy” has 15 songs written by Scott Elmegreen, whose previous shows include “Ivy and Bean, the Musical” and “Magic School Bus, Live! The Climate Challenge.”

Ladybug Girl is played by Khalia Davis, whose past performances include “The Book Club,” Center Repertory Theatre; “Hairspray,” Berkeley Playhouse, and “Beauty and the Beast,” Broadway by the Bay.

Khalia is joined by three bug friends.
