Trio to spearhead Liberty D-11 effort
Liberty’s wrestling team will be led by a trio of Andrew Gunning (HWT), KJ Fenstermacher (120) and Luke Werner (113) when they set to host the 68th annual District 11 3A wrestling tournament this weekend.
With expectations always high for the Hurricanes under head coach Jody Karam, the veteran leader is looking for more of the continued success his program has become accustomed to this time of the year.
“We’re looking to advance six or seven wrestlers to regionals and finish in the top five of the team standings,” said Karam. “We obviously expect Luke, KJ and Andrew to do well.”
Werner won last year’s 106-pound championship as a sophomore, but falls in a tougher weight class this weekend led by freshmen Julian Chlebove (Northampton) and Ryan Anderson (Bethlehem Catholic), who are favored to come away with the district gold.
Fenstermacher will likely see Northampton’s Dan Moran as his biggest competition at 120 this weekend. Both junior wrestlers met in last year’s 113-pound district finals, with Moran squeaking out a 5-3 decision for the title.
Finally, it has been the year of Andrew Gunning, as the senior heavyweight is 31-0 with his eyes set on a state championship.
Gunning’s toughest task at districts will come from Bethlehem Catholic, as Niko Camacho and Gunning are the two lead horses in the tournament.
