Hawks ready for district tourney

All eyes will be on Bethlehem Catholic this weekend when they gear up for the District 11 3A individual wrestling tournament at Liberty’s Memorial Gymnasium.

Fresh off the Hawks team title at the PIAA championships two weeks ago, Becahi’s encore kicks off on Friday at 4 p.m. when pigtails and preliminary rounds get underway.

“Coming off team states, obviously the goal is to win the district title,” said head coach Jeff Karam. “Tournaments are such a different thing than dual meets though. A lot depends on the seeding and hoping to get a few upsets along the way.”

With seniors Luke Karam (126), Stephen Maloney (138), Mike Labriola (170) and Adam Soldridge (182) back in the fold this weekend as defending district champions from last season, Becahi has a chance to surpass last year’s five district champions from the field when they coasted to a team title at the District 11 tournament.

Newcomers Zach Glenn, so., (106) and Ryan Anderson, fr., (113) will also contend for district crowns this weekend, alongside Niko Camacho, jr., (HWT).

“The returning district champs should have strong tournaments,” Karam said. “Really excited to see how Ryan Anderson and Niko Camacho compete given that this is the first district tournament for both of them.

“I would hope we would have a good showing at 106, 132, 145, 152, and 195 as well. Really believe any of those guys are capable of challenging for a district title.”

With the Hawks aspirations to win a district, regional and team title in Hershey over the next few weeks, starting off on the right foot at districts will imperative for Becahi’s goals down the road.

“I would really like to see 11 or 12 wrestlers advance to regionals,” said Karam. “If we can get at least 11 through, that gives us a good opportunity to make a run at the team state title.”
