Callahan leads Pates’ quest for D-11 title
Freedom’s aspirations for this weekend’s District 11 3A wrestling tournament can vary from simple to potentially great when things are all said and done Saturday night at Liberty’s Memorial Gymnasium.
The Patriots will compete with only one returning district medalist from last year’s team, as senior Dylan Brown (120) enters his final year as a three-time district place-winner, as he finished fourth at 113 pounds last year.
After finishing second in the team standings last February, head coach Brandon Hall knows expectations are tempered heading into this weekend.
“Our focus is to place and advance as many wrestlers as possible to regionals,” Hall said. “As a staff, we’re excited to see Dylan, Thomas Bonilla and Ryan DeLoach compete at weight classes better suited to their body size. Evan Callahan has had a solid season and is certainly focused and training to win a district title.”
Callahan (18-2) will be Freedom’s strongest shot at a district title this weekend when he competes at 220. He’ll have to deal with Central Catholic’s Joe Gladish (23-1), as the two wrestlers are favorites to meet in the finals.
Hall is hoping to advance between four and seven wrestlers to regionals.
