Bethlehem Catholic and Liberty’s girls’ basketball teams survived their first round of District 11 playoffs with victories in Class 3A and Class 4A, respectively, but the Hurricanes fell to Pottsville in their quarterfinal game on Friday night.
On Saturday, Becahi scored a 48-33 victory over East Stroudsburg North at Whitehall High School.
Tied 20-20 at halftime, the Hawks came back in the third and fourth quarters to outscore the Timberwolves 28-13.
Tessa Zamolyi and Morgan Orloski had 15 points apiece for Becahi.
The Hawks will take on Blue Mountain in the semifinal on Wednesday at Martz Hall. The game comes after Press deadlines.
Liberty took a nine-point lead over the Crimson Tide into the locker room at halftime, but were held scoreless in the third quarter, while Pottsville scored 19 points which led to an eventual 56-48 victory over the Hurricanes.
Liberty’s first game of the tournament resulted in a 60-37 victory over Bangor last Tuesday.
“I never saw so much energy from all of us,” said Kaylin West. “I most definitely couldn’t be more proud. We ran through our plays, and we kept the up-tempo. Those are the only reasons why we won.”
If the Hurricanes had any misstep, it was their sluggish third quarter, which ended up being their downfall in their game against Pottsville.
“We come out slow in the third quarter. It’s been typical,” said West.
West had 11 points against Pottsville. Maddie Capuano scored 22. Torie Zerbe had 8 points, Taysia Snead had 5, and Kristina Polak scored 2.
The Liberty girls concluded their season with a record of 18-7.
