S. Whitehall writer remembers banjo-playing friend

To the Editor:

When it comes to women four-string banjo players, the list is not all that long.

Cathy Reilly and Synthia Sayer spring to mind, but a close friend of mine has always been called, Queen of the Banjo and her name is Georgette Twain.

I met Georgette 15 years ago and we have corresponded by phone or letters since.

She is world known and, at one time she took lessons and performed with the king of the banjo, Eddie Peabody.

Georgette starred at Harveys in Tahoe, performed on cruise ships and made several recordings.

She played as an opening act for comedian, Phyllis Diller, was a life member of the Sacramento Banjo Band and often played on the Lawrence Welk Show as a featured banjo player.

In 2007, she was inducted into the National Four String Banjo Hall of Fame in Oklahoma, which was a very prestigious honor.

In May 2015, she and her daughter, Cecilia, who played a fiddle, last performed in Sacramento, Calif.

Most of her life she lived in Gardnerville, Nev. and Georgette died at age 91 in Reno, Nev.

I will miss her “cherry” notes and her great banjo playing.
