Molitoris is named Coplay’s new mayor

In a unanimous decision, Coplay Borough Council appointed Dean Molitoris as mayor during its regular meeting Tuesday night. He will fill the remaining term of Joseph Bundra, who resigned the position at the beginning of the year.

“I want to thank all those who supported me and encouraged me to apply. I will work with council to make Coplay better,” Molitoris said.

Magisterial District Judge Robert Halal was on hand to swear in the new mayor.

Molitoris has served the borough in various capacities, working on borough committees and with Coplay Sports.

Kimberly Fitzpatrick submitted her application for the position as well. Council members thanked her after the meeting. James Peluso also applied but did not participate in any of the interviews.

Council also appointed George Prebula to the civil service commission with a term ending in December 2021.

The borough is looking to fill a vacancy on its planning commission.

Solicitor Lisa Pereira commented on the lease agreement between Coca-Cola and various parties for improvements at Sammy Balliet Stadium.

“I was asked why we have a lease that addresses the borough,” she said. “The lease for the scoreboard must be with the owner of the property.”

Larry Gutleber, commander of American Legion Post 426, asked that council move quickly on the scoreboard.

“We have someone ready to put the scoreboard up, and baseball will be starting in March. We need to get this done,” he said. Council passed the ground lease.

The remaining lease has terms that need to be reviewed.

“We just got the lease today, and there are conditions and terms that are confusing. We will be reviewing the lease and making the necessary changes,” said Pereira.

As Councilman Stephen Burker explained, there is a binding contract between legion sports teams and Coca-Cola. There are fewer restrictions with Coplay Sports.

“We want to be sure that the borough can use the field for events,” he said.

Pereira and Solicitor James Preston will get the details squared away.

“We are in contact with Coca-Cola representatives so they know we need the changes,” Pereira said.

Councilwoman Janet Eisenhauer reported that the borough spent almost $3,000 in overtime cleaning up from the historic snowfall last month. The overtime budget is $4,000.
