BC ends season strong, falls in playoffs
Bethlehem Catholic’s girls’ basketball team ended its regular season in a big way, scoring victories over Freedom, William Allen, and most recently, Liberty, last week.
“Liberty is definitely a big rival, and they played us tough last time. Their starting five are dangerous, but we came out and started faster and stronger than last night [against Allen],” said Becahi forward, Sarah Baumann, who scored 12 points.
By the end of the first quarter, the Hawks led the Hurricanes 27-12.
Becahi continued to pound on the Hurricanes into the second quarter. Tessa Zamolyi scored and was fouled on the shot, Baumann came up with a lost Liberty ball and tossed it in the basket for two points, and Jordynn Jones scored two more points before a Liberty timeout was called.
“Our mindset was more energy and effort. We came out firing and got our offensive break going,” said Baumann.
Maddie Capuano sparked the Hurricanes with a three-pointer, and a lay-up on a steal, and Kaylin West scored four points before the second quarter ended, and the halftime score was 38-26.
Baumann said, “We definitely wanted to increase our lead at halftime by 15 to 20 points.”
Although the Hawks fell a little short of that particular goal, Morgan Orloski came out firing for the Hawks to start the third quarter. The Becahi guard was matched up on defense with Capuano.
“My goal was for her to not get the ball in the first place,” Orloski said. “I was supposed to completely deny her.”
Capuano tallied 18 points for the Hurricanes altogether, but the Hawks took a 55-36 lead into the start of the fourth quarter.
“At certain points, it was difficult to get through some screens, but we adjusted to that. This was a big game to show who we really are,” said Orloski.
Becahi’s 59-52 victory came on Senior Night.
“It’s a lot of emotions, crying, happy, sad, anxious for the games after,” said Becahi guard and only senior, Jordynn Jones.
The Hawks’ victory over Liberty clinched a spot in the East Penn Conference Tournament, which began last Friday when third-seeded Nazareth defeated sixth-seeded Becahi 60-45.
The Eagles shot 20-for-22 at the foul line to hold off the Hawks. Jess Durnin led Nazareth, and all scorers, with 21 points while teammate Tessa Brugler had 16. Becahi was led by Tess Zamolyi who had 14. Now the Hawks look forward to the District 11 tournament.
