The Allentown West Rotary recently handed out 90 dictionaries to third-grade students at Northwestern Elementary School.
Herb Klotz, president and Gloria Zimmerman, club service chair, distributed the books to the excited youngsters.
When Klotz asked students what a dictionary was used for, he was told ‘to help you spell stuff and look up words you do not know.’
Students from Jacob Bennett, Jodi Chandler, Tara Riegel and Marisa Bartholomew’s classes perused the books.
The students not only learned how to look up words but explored the extra information available at the back of the dictionaries.
The dictionaries contain information on sign language, maps and planets.
Students also learned the longest English word in the dictionary has 1,909 letters.
The Rotary provides dictionaries each year for third-grade students at both Northwestern and Weisenberg elementary schools.
The members also are responsible for the Snack Pack program that provides snacks for students whose families are in need.
