Writer seeks fellow ‘A-Treat’ swimmers

To the Editor:

Now that the A-Treat brand name is again in stores and on persons’ lips, the name conjures up images and remembrances of a different “A-Treat” I remember when I was a kid living in Schnecksville in the 1940s.

Public swimming places were very limited. There was the pool and park in Neffs and I learned to swim by skinny dipping in the Jordan Creek at the Trexler Lehigh County Game Preserve with my schoolmate, Willis Fry, the son of the gamekeeper.

But other than those two places, there was a home and an inground cement pool alongside a home on a back road between Schnecksville and Neffs.

I do not think the home was occupied during the week, but on weekends when the weather was nice and warm, there were people at the house and in the pool.

We knew that place as “A-Treat.” Just that!

Many times we would ride our bikes there to skinny-dip in the “A-Treat” pool.

We had no phone or TV, but we played “war” using the peach trees in the Trexler Orchard near my home but to go swimming was the best treat we had at “A-Treat.”

Does anyone remember that home and pool? Please write me.
