LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Hoop races come down stretch

The race to the postseason is on for all three of Bethlehem’s teams as we head into the post-apocalyptic weekend of winter storm Jonas.

The remnants of more than 30 inches of snow from Saturday postponed a heavy slate of contests over the weekend and Tuesday, but at least there is a clearer picture for local teams playoff aspirations after last week’s results.

With all teams in the East Penn Conference having 12 of their 16 league games under their belts, Liberty came out as the big winners last week, as the Hurricanes (8-9, 7-5) moved one victory away from clinching a district berth with five games to go. The ’Canes, barring an epic collapse down the final stretch of the season, should be able to check off a postseason berth in districts, but they’re also still in the hunt for one of the two remaining EPC playoff spots available.

With eight teams (Liberty, Bethlehem Catholic, Freedom, Easton, East Stroudsburg North, Whitehall, Nazareth and Northampton) still vying for EPC playoff spots, it’s fair to say that the race to qualify will come down to the league’s final regular season date on February 3.

With wins over Freedom (9-9, 6-6) and Allen (12-5, 9-3) last week, Liberty jumped to second place in the Steel Division behind the Canaries.

With division games against Easton (7-9, 5-7), Freedom, Dieruff (4-12, 2-10) and Becahi (10-7, 6-6) left, Liberty holds the keys to the car for an EPC berth.

Speaking of the Golden Hawks, their shocking 74-65 loss to Dieruff last Friday proved to be costly at the moment, as a win over the Huskies would have clinched a district berth for the Hawks and would have kept them in second place in the division.

Now, they’re looking up to Liberty and Allen in the division, while still needing to play both of them, along with Easton and Freedom on the schedule. The Hawks only focus now is to win one to get into districts and to see how the league playoff race unfolds.

Freedom felt the pain last Friday as well, losing in overtime to Easton 61-55 to hurt their playoff chances.

The Pates need two wins out of their last four games against Dieruff, Liberty, Becahi and Allen to clinch a district berth, but have the toughest task of the three Bethlehem schools to punch their ticket into both postseason tournaments.

Here are the latest EPC standings as of Tuesday. Teams with an asterisk have already clinched a league playoff berth.
