Hawks look forward to bout against Nazareth

Bethlehem Catholic’s wrestling team hasn’t been challenged much this season in East Penn Conference wrestling, as the Hawks (12-1) have built themselves an 8-0 mark in the conference quite comfortably.

So, when this weekend’s East Penn Conference wrestling championships take place, the Hawks will finally get the competition they’ve been craving for in their own conference.

Taking on an undefeated Nazareth (11-0, 7-0) team in the 3 p.m. slate of prime-time matches at Easton Area Middle School means that fans will get to see a matchup that everyone has been waiting for in the Lehigh Valley, but also for the Becahi faithful.

The closest EPC score Becahi has had in the conference this season was last week’s 57-13 victory over Dieruff and that was without using their full lineup.

When the Hawks have used their top wrestlers, they’ve produced wins over Northampton by a 64-6 margin (last week) and a 52-7 victory over Parkland earlier this season.

With Becahi head coach Jeff Karam anticipating one of their toughest tests of the season this weekend, he understands that this won’t be a whitewash like most of their league matches this year.

“This should be a great match that will most likely come down to bonus points and which team wins the toss ups,” he said. “There are six bouts that could really go either way.”

Those bouts that will help in deciding the nature of the match include 106, 113, 120, 145, 152 and 220.

At 106, Zach Glenn (20-4) will take on Sean Pierson (23-3) in perhaps the best matchup on the afternoon. Nazareth should have an edge at 113 with Tyson Klump (19-4) taking on Ryan Anderson (13-4), while at 120 Luke Carty (17-5) should be able to knock off Codey O’Rourke (10-3).

Nazareth’s Brock Wilson (21-5) will take on Stephen Maloney (21-7) in a battle of the two best wrestlers in the area at 145 and another tight bout should be expected at 152, as Cole Karam (23-3) gets Ricky Fornaciari (17-8).

At 220, Karam isn’t sure what the matchup will be, as he could send Andre Blackett (5-2) out against Mohamed Tounkara (3-10) if the flow of the bout leads to it.

Either way, tossups and bonus points always come into play in tight contests and this weekend’s battle will be the toughest the Hawks have seen in the area.

“They (Nazareth) may be slightly favored at 113 and 145, while we may be slightly favored at 120 and 152,” Karam said. “106 and 220 are real tight. I’m really looking forward to 106. That should be a great match.”
