’Canes survive Allen

It may have been the moment that Liberty’s basketball team has been waiting for all season. The Hurricanes 66-65 overtime victory over Allen last Friday was a jolt of momentum and confidence for a team that has struggled to find consistency throughout the season.

Cameron Hoffman scored a career-high 29 points, including three triples, to help keep the Hurricanes (8-9, 7-5) on pace with the Canaries (12-5, 9-3) in the East Penn Conference’s Steel Division.

Hoffman hit the game winning three-pointer from the top of the key with 10 seconds left in overtime to give the ’Canes a one-point cushion. Allen’s final heave at a game-winning three-pointer fell to no avail, giving Liberty their biggest win of the season.

“We’ve been in a lot of close games this season,” said head coach Chad Landis. “We’ve won some close ones and lost some, but this was definitely the biggest win of the year for us.”

Last Friday’s win marked a perfect week for the Hurricanes, as they defeated Freedom 44-43 as well to push them one game away from clinching a district playoff berth.

After an emotional win over Freedom, Landis was happy his team was able to fight against a talented Allen squad, who got a team high 21-points from Talek Williams.

Alex Serrano, who assisted Hoffman on his game winning three pointer, scored 14 points to pace the ’Canes as their second scorer in double figures.

The win snapped a five-game winning streak for the Canaries, who still hold a two-game lead over Liberty in the division.

However, with back-to-back wins in the division, maybe the Hurricanes are heating up at the right time as they head into this week’s slate against Easton and Freedom on Tuesday and Thursday night.

Liberty has their final non-league contest of the season Saturday night at home against Williamsport.

“I hope wins like this helps us,” Landis said. “Having a couple days off from practice because of the snow doesn’t help, but I think the win over Allen will help us mentally going forward.”
