BC girls top Dieruff
Bethlehem Catholic’s girls’ basketball team rebounded from a 55-32 loss to Easton last Tuesday with a 56-30 victory over Dieruff on Friday night.
“I feel like we did execute, we looked more down low, and we had a better inside game today,” said Becahi forward, Tessa Zamolyi.
In the first quarter against the Huskies, Natalie Rhine, who had nine points, scored for the Hawks on a fast break and was fouled. In the second quarter, it was Zamolyi who was on the scoring end of a fast break, having received a pass from Julia Zambo.
Zamolyi scored 24 points against the Huskies, 11 in the first quarter, and by halftime, the Hawks led 32-12.
“We mainly talked about our defense, pressing up, and getting steals,” Zamolyi said.
The Huskies also made some adjustments at the half, ultimately scoring 10 points in the third quarter, which included a three-pointer by Seven Brown.
Becahi coach Jose Medina said, “In the beginning, we did a great job. With the younger girls, I told them, don’t let the other team speed you up. Be confident in what you do.”
In Becahi’s loss to Easton, it was the first time the Hawks played without point guard, Jordynn Jones. In addition, the Hawks had a tough time stopping Gabby Bloshuk, who scored a game-high 25 points for the Red Rovers.
Medina said, “They came out on all cylinders. We talked about where they’d be and where they like to shoot, being in the right spots, and looking for better ways. We knew where [Bloshuk] liked to shoot, and we wanted to force her to put the ball on the floor. We kept getting beat today.”
Medina was also trying to find the right mix of players at times.
“We’re young, but we don’t make excuses. We need to take advantage of opportunities,” he said.
The Hawks seemed to have done just that on Jan. 14, when they came back after halftime to score 23 points in the third quarter of their 58-46 victory over Emmaus.
Medina had been less than pleased by the Hawks’ performance in the first half against the Hornets, so he pointed out the double mirrors in the Emmaus locker room, in order to make a point about how much he disliked what he was seeing on the basketball court.
Win or lose, Coach Medina is also trying to build character in his players.
“I want more selflessness, leadership. I don’t want ‘I’m upset and let the whole world know.’ I want them to be there for someone else, even when it’s not going our way,” Medina said.
Also last week, Liberty defeated Freedom 54-44, and Allen 61-52.
In the Hurricanes’ game against the Patriots, Freedom began a comeback in the third quarter with 18 points, but Liberty responded with 19 points in the fourth quarter.
Kristina Polak had 17 points for the Hurricanes. Meckenzie Herman had 15 points for the Patriots, including three threes, and Kaitlyn Swint scored 13 points, also for Freedom.
In the Hurricanes’ game against the Canaries, Kaylin West had 25 points for Liberty.
