As the storm intensified during the afternoon, dropping snow at the rate of two to three inches per hour, the sky darkened sufficiently to trigger street lights to come on along First Street at SteelStacks. Visibility dropped to near zero, giving the former Bethlehem Steel blast furnaces an eerie ghost-like appearance in the background.
