Coplay council discusses mayoral process

With the abrupt resignation of Mayor Joseph Bundra, Coplay Borough Council is tasked with appointing a replacement to fill out Bundra’s remaining term of office. At its regular meeting Jan. 12, council addressed the process.

The open position will be advertised in local newspapers. Candidates are to prepare an application and submit the application to the borough secretary, Sandra Gyecsek, as soon as possible and prior to the next scheduled workshop meeting Feb. 2. Candidates are advised that a reasonable period should be allowed for consideration of all candidate applications. A timely submission is appreciated.

“We will review the applications and have an open interview during the workshop meeting on Feb. 2,” said Louis Bodish, president of the council.

Applicants are advised to prepare a resume of sorts that members of council can review, although Bodish did not indicate there would be any initial screening of candidates. It might be assumed that if hundreds of residents applied for the position, there might be a screening to determine who can meet more than the minimum standards.

The requirement for the mayor’s position is residency in Coplay for more than a year.

Council members will interview candidates at the Feb. 2 workshop meeting in open session.

“It is important that residents be allowed to ask questions of the candidates,” said Bodish.

Once candidates have presented their background, council will consider the options during the week between the workshop and the regular meeting Feb. 9, at which council will make a decision for a mayor.

There was some discussion on whether the candidate should be a registered Democrat to match the party affiliation of the former mayor. There are no clear guidelines on the requirement. Solicitor James Preston will check any requirements for a party affiliation.

Further details and any additional information can be obtained from the borough secretary.
