Capuano hits 1,000 points

Maybe Maddie Capuano wasn’t keeping exact count, but her Liberty High School family was, and on Jan. 14 at Whitehall High School, the Hurricane senior scored her 1,000th career point on a drive down the baseline during the Hurricanes game against the Zephyrs.

“It was awesome,” Capuano said. “It’s been behind me the whole season.”

It was Liberty assistant coach, Terry Marcincin, who notified Capuano during a timeout in the fourth quarter that she was three points away from 1,000.

Liberty head coach Becky Soto said, “It was nice to be part of that experience and see it come to a head and share those moments. It was just a matter of where.”

Originally, Liberty’s home game against Emmaus on Jan. 12 was a possibility, but by then, Capauano was 30 points away. Adding to the pressure at Whitehall was that the Liberty girls were trailing in the game.

“It’s a lot of pressure,” said Soto. “We talked, and I said the pressure’s not on you. When that happens, we’ll be there regardless.”

Prior to the Bethlehem Catholic game this past Saturday evening, Capuano was honored at center court, joined by her parents, Michelle and Lenny, coach Soto, and Liberty principal Harrison Bailey III, and was re-awarded the game ball.

Regarding her daughter’s 1,000th point, Michelle Capuano said, “It was almost like a surreal moment. This year, that was her goal, and we said, that’s gonna’ be hard. I could tell, it was stressful for her. We’re very proud. She is a great girl.”

At the start of the season, Capuano was 270 points away from 1,000.

Lenny Capuano said, “She was determined. That’s the way her mentality is. She doesn’t get fazed. It’s such a huge accomplishment.”

Her father recalled his daughter’s first game in third grade, when she scored 30 points, and her coach had to tell her to stop shooting.

“All her hard work came to a conclusion,” he said.

Maddie Capuano’s older sister Nicole and younger brother Michael were also in attendance to witness her 1,000th point.

And even with all the confetti, balloons, and signs, Maddie Capuano is all about the Hurricanes.

“She’s not just concerned with herself,” Michelle Capuano said. “She’s more about the team. As long as the girls win, that’s what she’s concerned about.”
