’Canes need wins
It’s not often that Liberty’s backs are against the wall when it comes to qualifying for the postseason, but the Hurricanes are in that position after Saturday’s 50-45 defeat at home to Bethlehem Catholic.
The loss put the Hurricanes at 6-9 overall on the season with seven games left on the calendar, starting with Tuesday night’s rivalry contest with Freedom.
Head coach Chad Landis knows his team is in a tough spot heading into a week against the Patriots (9-7), as well as a Friday showdown with Allen (11-4).
“Going down the stretch it’s going to be tough,” said Landis of Liberty’s slate over the next two weeks. “We’re back with our division games and everyone is familiar with each other. You have no idea how these games are going to go until you see the guys play on a given night. We’re just trying to extend our season with our league record.”
With Liberty sitting at 5-5 in the East Penn Conference before Tuesday’s game with Freedom, the ’Canes need to win three of their final six league games to clinch a district berth.
Liberty hasn’t missed the postseason in Landis’s eight-years as coach and have qualified for districts for 10 straight years.
Only once during Landis’s tenure has Liberty come close to missing the postseason.
By the end of this week, the picture will be clearer for the Hurricanes when it comes to their agenda down the stretch.
To say that they need to at least split this week’s two contests would be an understatement.
“We just need to figure out how to finish games,” said Landis. “We didn’t a score a field goal in the fourth quarter against Beca until the final minute. I think like most teams, there’s guys on the team that understand the situation we’re in and the urgency needed and then there’s other guys that you wonder if they understand it fully.”
