Weisenberg Elementary students learn about fire safety
Weisenberg Elementary third-grade students recently made their annual trek to the Weisenberg Fire Department.
Students left their school across the street from the fire station with the assistance of a fire truck that stopped traffic, before the youngster walked down the path to the firehouse.
While there, students learned about safety from volunteer firefighter Randy Zack.
He suggested when the students went home that evening they should sit down with their family and plan two ways to exit their home, as well as a place to meet after they escaped a fire.
Zach stressed they should never go back into the house once they were out, even if it were to rescue a pet.
Firefighters will look for the pets when they arrive, he said.
“Get out and stay out,” he stressed.
Fire Chief Brian Carl then led the students into the equipment bay where they learned about the different fire engines and trucks housed there.
“Just as you go to school to learn, so do we,” Carl explained.
“We are trained on rescue techniques and how to fight fires.” Carl said.
The Quint, has a 109-foot ladder that allows them to reach homes that are set back from the road more easily.
The engine makes it easier for them to reach a field or car fire.
There is also a tanker and pick up truck.
Recently, Weisenberg Township contracted with Cetronia Ambulance Corps to house an ambulance and crew at the station and the paramedics are on call 24-hours a day and sleep upstairs when needed.
