Hurricanes end five-game losing skid
Liberty’s five-game losing streak finally came to an end last week when the Hurricanes thumped Nazareth 63-49 at home.
It helped push the ’Canes to 5-7 overall, but maybe more importantly, bumped their mark in the East Penn Conference to 4-3.
Not only was the win important for the sake of getting out of the loss column, but also in regards to beating a quality team like Nazareth (8-4, 5-4).
“It definitely makes you feel better after getting a win after so long,” said head coach Chad Landis. “We just played well the majority of the game and we were consistent. That’s the one thing we’ve been lacking this year - consistency. When we can play like that for four quarters, these are the type of results we can expect.” Liberty led throughout the contest, giving up only 13 points in the first half en route to a 23-13 halftime advantage.
Cameron Hoffman had a stellar night, leading the way with 22 points and 10 rebounds, while his interior partner, Andrew Hudak, chipped in a 12 point, 11 rebound double-double.
Alex Serrano also hit double figures, netting 10 points on the night.
With the losing streak in the rear view, Liberty now has to start a new streak by putting wins together in a difficult slate of three games this week.
It started with Tuesday’s road contest at Emmaus (10-2), which was past Press deadlines. They follow that up with a Thursday showdown at home against Whitehall (9-3) and close out the week at Bethlehem Catholic (7-4) on Saturday.
“This week will determine what the rest of the season becomes,” Landis said. “We need to get a couple wins this week to makes things easier on ourselves down the road.”
Freedom (8-5, 6-2) still sits in good shape heading into this week, despite last Friday’s 57-51 loss to Northampton (8-5).
The Pates are second in the Steel Division behind Allen (8-4, 6-2) and are 3-0 in the division.
They’re direction for the rest of the season will also come into play this week, as they hosted Parkland (9-3) on Tuesday night and then have a nonconference date with Southern Lehigh (11-2) on Thursday at home. The Pates close out the week Saturday afternoon at Allen.
