Finn sets indoor record

Liberty senior, Rachel Finn, broke the meet record in the pole vault at 12-3 two weeks ago at the Robert J. Burdette Invitational at Lehigh University.

“Going over the bar, even falling, it was so exciting,” Finn said. “It was our first meet of the indoor season, so I’m very excited about that.”

Liberty track and field coach Kevin Bush was right there as the bar was raised for Finn and the other competitors.

“That was nice to have,” Finn said.

Each pole vaulter was given three attempts at each height.

“I came in at 10-0, skipped to 11-0, and eventually got to 12-3, and I got the meet record,” said Finn. “Outdoors at states [in May], I cleared 12-0, so I was hoping to clear 12-0 here. I came in expecting to do well but not that well.”

Earlier this school year, Finn decided to give up cross country and concentrate on pole vaulting at Vertical Assault.

“I had all of fall to train, and I was able to practice more than I had in the last three years,” she said. “I qualified for so many things now.”

No matter what happens from this time forward, Finn is guaranteed a spot at states, and even nationals.

“It’s really awesome to be doing that so early,” Finn said.
