’Canes prep for Escape the Rock

On a weekend where many local wrestling teams will hit the road for tournaments, Liberty is no different when they’ll participate in the Escape the Rock tournament at Council Rock South.

Belle Vernon and New Jersey’s Don Bosco Prep highlight this year’s field of entrants, as Liberty will be joined by fellow District 11 counterparts, Northampton, Parkland and Stroudsburg.

The Hurricanes return three wrestlers who medaled at last year’s Escape the Rock, as Luke Werner (113), KJ Fenstermacher (126) and Andrew Gunning (HWT) highlight Liberty’s chances of hardware this weekend.

“Obviously, the goal is to get as many as possible through to day two,” said head coach Jody Karam. “I think once you get through the first day, your focus becomes narrowed on a select few. Gunning has the best shot to win, but you can’t count out any state qualifiers such as Werner and Fenstermacher either.”

Werner and Fenstermacher both finished fifth a year ago at the tournament, while Gunning finished sixth, but he enters the tournament as the top-seed and is the favorite to come away with the crown.

“We have worked with Andrew on making a conscious effort not to look too far in advance,” Karam said. “I think this event is the perfect practice for implementing what we have been working. We approach the Escape the Rock as a business trip and it’s certainly a priority of ours.”

Matt Maloney (106), Joey Curzi (132), Jasson Morales (145), Anthony Emig (152) and Damen Moyer (170) will also be in the mix for medal contention.
