After conducting Coplay’s reorganization meeting on Monday night, Mayor Joseph Bundra left the meeting but did leave a letter with the borough secretary, Sandra Gyecsek.
In the letter, Bundra made his resignation effective Feb. 2. He cited personal reasons for his resignation.
Council and the mayor clashed over a couple of issues during 2015, most notably the implementation of a curfew for youth under age 18.
In a private interview with The Press, Bundra made it clear that he held no animosity but had personal considerations that left him unable to carry out his duties.
“I want to thank the residents of Coplay who have supported me over my more than 14 years as a councilman and mayor,” he said.
In his letter, Bundra reiterated his support for Coplay: “It has been a great privilege to serve Coplay, and I have been committed to improving the quality of life in our community. I cherish the people and relationships I have developed with residents and municipal officials.
“I wish Coplay leadership well with the challenges that face our community in the future,” he said.
Council will go about the process of appointing a new mayor. There will be a clearer idea of the process at the next regular meeting, set for Jan. 12.
