Christmas Day accident results in fatality

A 29-year-old woman died Dec. 26 after she was struck by a vehicle while near her vehicle after she struck a concrete center median along Interstate 78 in Lower Macungie Township the night before.

Tara Marie Slamon, of Apollo Drive, Trenton, N.J., was pronounced dead 2:40 a.m. Dec. 26 at Lehigh Valley Health Network, Cedar Crest, Salisbury Township, according to a press release from the Lehigh County Coroner’s office.

Slamon’s death was found to be due to blunt force injuries.

According to State Police at Fogelsville, Slamon was eastbound along Interstate 78 at approximately 8:45 p.m. Dec. 25 when her vehicle traveled from the right to the left lane of the road before hitting the concrete center median near mile marker 53.9. The vehicle stopped facing west near mile marker 54.

Slamon and her passenger, Joseph A. Rivera, 33, of Hamilton, N.J., exited the vehicle.

A sport utility vehicle driven by Shawn Elliott Fariello, 46, of Easton, stopped on the right shoulder of the road to assist Slamon and Rivera. Meanwhile, a second sport utility vehicle was traveling in the left lane of travel. The second SUV, driven by Stanley J. Pieklo, 71, of Saylorsburg, allegedly hit the front of Slamon’s vehicle as well as Slamon. The SUV continued across the right lane, impacted the right guard rail as well as the SUV driven by Fariello, Fariello and his passenger, Tara Michelle Fariello, 46, also of Easton.

Cetronia EMA assisted with treatment and transport to Lehigh Valley Health Network. Upper Macungie fire crews and Pennsylvania State Police troopers also responded.

Officials from the Lehigh County Coroner’s Office, Pennsylvania State Police and the Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office are investigating the accident.
