Liberty swimmer, Robert Negron, broke the school record in the 50 freestyle with a time of 21:47 in the Hurricane boys’ 221-65 victory over Whitehall last Tuesday.
“Shortly after I finished, I looked over and saw that my time was pretty low,” Negron said.
Confirmation that the record had been broken was given to Negron by Liberty graduate, Brandon Hlavaty, who, along with other 2015 swimming alumni, was attending the meet.
“I was pretty excited, and happy I’d gotten it,” said Negron. “I came in today, and shortly before, I thought, why not go for it?”
Negron attributed his success to a lot of practice, sprint work, and one-on-one time with Liberty assistant swim coach, Jeff Matyus.
The previous school record was held by 2015 grad, Evan Smith, who was also in attendance at the meet.
Negron also won the 100 free with a time of 48.52.
Other individual event winners for the Hurricanes were Nolan Vanatta in the 200 IM with a time of 2:10.72, and in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:02.19, Reid Rossi in the 100 butterfly with a time of 56.01, and Jase Smith in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:00.58.
Liberty freshman, Kellen Rogers, won the diving event with 164.55 points.
The Hurricane boys also placed first in all relay events, winning the 200 medley relay with Smith, Vanatta, Rossi, and Negron; the 200 free relay with Anthony Delcorso, Jake Evert, Smith, and John Buttillo; and the 400 free relay with Brice Kessler, Christopher Chambers, Evert, and Negron.
