Hawks win King of the Mountain

Bethlehem Catholic laid their claim as King of the Mountain champions again, as the Golden Hawks returned from Central Mountain High School over the weekend as the runaway team champions, as well as crowning three individual titles and 11 place winners from one of the country’s prestigious wrestling tournaments.

Luke Karam (126), Mikey Labriola (170) and Niko Camacho (HWT) brought home titles to help push Becahi’s team total to 214 points to give them a hefty cushion over second-place Boyertown (182 points).

Karam earned his first King of the Mountain title with an 8-0 major decision over Greater Latrobe’s Ethan McCoy in the championship bout.

Labriola defeated top-seeded Jacob Oliver of Huntingdon 6-3 in the 170-pound final to win his first KoM title as well.

Camacho rounded out the trio of new KoM champions with a 3-1 victory over Northern York’s Noah Smith in the championship.

“I thought we wrestled really well for our first major competition of the year,” said Hawks head coach Jeff Karam. “I felt we wrestled a 9.5 out of 10. What we’re preaching in the room, we saw it happen at a high level on the mat.”

The Hawks competed with 13 wrestlers at the tournament, as talented freshman Ryan Anderson (113) was forced out because of weight-descent issues and Brandon Blobe (220) was nursing an injury.

Karam hopes that the performance last weekend can now act as a spring board heading into this weekend’s Beast of the East tournament in Delaware.

Before leaving for that, the Hawks will take on East Stroudsburg North and Freedom in East Penn Conference duals on Wednesday and Thursday respectively.

“We got to put together one heck of a tournament if we want to win this weekend,” he said. “I feel real good about where we’re at as a team in a tournament format. We took third at the Beast last year, so I just want to see improvement.”

Other Becahi wrestlers to place at the KoM were: Zach Glenn (106, fourth); Luke Carty (120, third); Jarred Papcsy (132, eighth); Joey Gould (138, third); Stephen Maloney (145, fourth); Cole Karam (152, second); Adam Soldridge (182, fourth) and Jody Crouse (195, eighth).
