Annemarie Hartzell, of Whitehall and a senior history major, was named to the honors program at Elizabethtown College for the 2015-16 academic year. Hartzell participated in advanced classes within the honors program during fall 2015.

Madison McCall, of Bath and a junior international business major, was also named to the honors program for the 2015-16 academic year. McCall participated in advanced classes within the honors program during fall 2015.

McCall was also named to Elizabetown College Student Senate. The organization works to better the experience for students, faculty and staff at the college and serves as the advocates and spokespeople for students’ needs on campus.

Megan Smith, of Whitehall, will take the opportunity to participate in an alternative spring break through Cedar Crest College’s community service program.

This service and learning immersion program exposes Smith to complex social and cultural issues through community visits, experiential learning, direct service, group discussion, readings and reflection activities.

By transforming herself into an advocate of social change on issues affecting our local, national and global communities, Smith will experience the joy and satisfaction of making an important contribution improving the world around her.

Hofstra Univ.

Robert Fehr, of Bath and a freshmen at Hofstra University, recently became a member of the 2015-16 wrestling team.

Hofstra University, a NCAA Division I program that competes in the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA), returns 14 wrestlers, including seven starters, from last year’s squad that placed 13th in the EIWA and 35th in the NCAA Division I Championships. The Pride, who opened their season Nov. 8, competed in the Cliff Keen-Las Vegas Invitational at Cashman Convention Center Dec. 4 and 5. The tournament featured 13 of the current top 25 Division I programs in the country in the 40-team field.

Hofstra University is a nationally ranked private university just 25 miles from New York City and all its cultural, recreational and professional opportunities. Dayanese Rodriguez, of Whitehall, was one of 22 students selected to participate in America Reads/America Counts, a federal work study position where tutors work with children and youth at a variety of during and after school programs throughout Allentown.

Through this national campaign, Rodriguez will have the challenging opportunity to help children learn to read and learn arithmetic.

Rodriguez and the 21 other students involved in this program participate in tutoring of kindergarten through eighth-grade children at Boys and Girls Club of Allentown, Pinebrook Services, Power Readers at Sheraton Elementary School, Trexler Middle School and the after-school program at Union Terrace Elementary School.

Cedar Crest College professors, consultants and Intermediate Unit instructors provide a diversity of workshops for the tutors. These workshops help the students become creative, effective, caring tutors for the children.
