’Canes second at Penn Manor
Liberty’s wrestling team ventured out of the area last weekend and came home just shy of the team title from the Penn Manor tournament.
The Hurricanes were outlasted by District 11 rival Parkland 190-163.5 in the team title race, as the Hurricanes placed 10 wrestlers and two champions in the event.
“We placed more than any other team with 10 of 14 wrestlers medaling,” said ’Canes head coach Jody Karam. “We showed improvement and toughness, made less mistakes and showing more confidence.
“I’d just like to see more continuous wrestling, in other words, hitting one move and quickly moving to the next with less hesitation.”
KJ Fenstermacher (126) and Andrew Gunning (HWT) each took home titles, as Fenstermacher won a 7-4 decision over Joe Lobeck of Lancaster Catholic to win his third PM title.
Fenstermacher scored all his points in the first period by putting Lobeck on his back early in the match.
Gunning continued his premise of being the best heavyweight in the state with a 7-3 decision over Vincent Walls of Avon Grove.
Two Hurricanes took fourth place, as Travis Brown (113) and Luke Werner (120) both lost their consolation final bouts.
Werner was edged by Council Rock North’s Aidan Burke 4-3, while Brown fell by a 4-0 score to Harrison Andrade of Souderton.
Matt Maloney took fifth following a 4-2 win over Shane Thompson of Council Rock North at 106.
Joey Curzi (132) took fifth and Anthony Emig (152) finished in sixth. Damon Moyer (160) and Andrue Velazquez (220) each took seventh, while Jasson Morales (145) finished in eighth.
Liberty (0-1) will look to shake off from their 36-25 dual meet loss to Nazareth last week when they travel to Pleasant Valley tonight.
