Borough gets new recycling contract

Hellertown Borough has a new one-year recycling contract.

At council’s Nov. 2 meeting, the new contract was approved for $81,000 with J.P. Mascaro & Sons of Allentown for 2016.

Council Vice President Joe Pampanin and Councilman Herb Payung were not present.

According to borough manager Cathy Hartranft, J.P. Mascaro & Sons was the sole company to submit a bid to the borough.

J.P. Mascaro & Sons serves as the current recycling hauler for the borough.

Hartranft said the new contract will cost an additional $842 monthly.

In other business, council voted 3-2 to reject reconsideration for a handicapped parking space on Keilman Avenue.

Last month council rejected Anne Rayan’s request for the spot. Rayan, 85, told council the spot was necessary due to the weakened condition of her legs.

Voting against the reconsideration request was council President Tom Reiger and Councilman John Bate. Mayor Richard Fluck cast the deciding vote.

Council also adopted the safety manual and approved the borough hall evacuation plan at the Nov. 2 meeting.
