Bernard E. Makovsky
Bernard “Barney” E. Makovsky, 86, died Oct. 27, 2015, in Lehigh Valley Hospital. He was the husband of the late Patricia (Ruth) Makovsky for 54 years.
Born in Cementon, he was a son of the late Michael Sr. and Suzanna (Malyniak) Makovsky.
He was an alumnus of Allentown Central Catholic High School and a 1952 college graduate.
He was in the U.S. Navy during the post-World War II era.
He worked with Commercial Credit Corporation, now part of Citi-Group, He was in various management positions in the banking and finance industry for 37 years and retired in 1988 as a vice president.
He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi parish, Allentown, where he was a lector and Eucharistic minister since 1965.
He was a master of ceremonies for the 50th anniversary of priesthood for Father Francis Walter, the church’s founding pastor, and for the parish’s 75th jubilee anniversary. He was a past president of the Allentown-Salisbury Kiwanis Club.
He is survived by a daughter, Kathleen and her husband Dr. Mark Pyles of Berwick; a brother, Al and his wife Jean of Whitehall; three sisters, Sister Jean Makovsky of Bethlehem, Patricia and her husband Joseph Grabarits of Northampton and Bonnie and her husband Richard Palenchar of Bethlehem; four grandchildren, Jonathan Makovsky, Matthew Pyles, Jean and her husband Greg Michael and Michael Pyles; one great-grandchild, Nicholas John Michael.
He was predeceased by a son, Bernard Jr.; two brothers, Michael and Alfred; and a granddaughter, Melissa Makovsky.
