Pastor Douglas Thorpe Seidel, 66, of Emmaus, died Oct. 3, 2015, at home surrounded by his family. Born in Portsmouth, Va., he was a son of the late Dr. Horace Y. and Jean H. (Thorpe) Seidel III.
He was a 1971 graduate of Muhlenberg College. In 1975 he received his Master of Divinity from Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia. He retired from Jesus Focus Ministries Southampton, Bucks County, Dec. 31, 2012, with 12 years of service. Prior, he was the pastor of Macungie Baptist Church. His first Sunday after serving a 2-1/2 year internship at the Huntington Valley Presbyterian Church was July 4, 1976. He was ordained Oct. 1976 and remained with the church for 25 years until Sunday, Oct. 3, 2001.
One of his avocations was rose gardening. He became a consultant for the Monticello Rose Collection in the mid-1990s, Bartram’s Garden in Philadelphia and Wyck in Germantown. He was a member of the Heritage Rose Foundation and served as a board member for three years.
He is survived by siblings, Bruce A. and his wife Laura, of Sagle, Idaho, Barbara J. and her husband Mark Holdbrook, of Lodi, Calif., Stuart T. and his wife Cheryl, of Boca Raton, Fla.; three nephews; three nieces; one grandnephew.
Memorial contributions may be made in his name to Macungie Christian Community, 126 S. Church St, Macungie, 18062. Arrangements were made by the David J. Boyko Funeral Home, Macungie.
