Many may remember him as the high-flying, energetic WWE wrestler of the 1980s. However, Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka will now be remembered as a man charged with murder.
On Sept. 1, Snuka, 72, of Camden County, N.J., was officially charged with third-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter in the May 1983 death of his then 23-year-old girlfriend Nancy Argentino, of Brooklyn, N.Y. Argentino was found unconscious in the George Washington Motor Lodge motel in Whitehall Township with brain injuries and 39 cuts and bruises, later medical reports indicated.
According to a Sept. 1 press conference held by Lehigh County District Attorney James Martin, Snuka was arraigned last Tuesday by Magisterial District Judge Robert C. Halal, with bail set at $100,000. Snuka later that day posted $10,000, or the required 10 percent of the total bail amount.
Martin said arrangements were made for Snuka to surrender to Lehigh County authorities, as well as surrender his passport.
The results of a Lehigh County grand jury were released Sept. 1, indicating Snuka assaulted Argentino multiple times and left her for dead on the motel bed.
The grand jury charge is the result of testimony taken from 20 witnesses, as well as then Whitehall Township Detective Gerald Procanyn, the DA’s office said.
The DA’s office also said Snuka, who was subpoenaed to testify before the grand jury, appeared with his attorney but refused to testify.
The preliminary hearing will be held 9:30 a.m., Sept. 21 in Halal’s office, 3678 Crescent Court East, Whitehall. However, the DA’s office said, due to the high level of interest in the case, a larger courtroom may be needed. In that case, the hearing may be held in the Lehigh County Courthouse. Such a decision will be made in the future by the court administrator, the DA’s office said.
