William L. Gruber

William L. Gruber, 90, of Emmaus, died Aug. 3, 2015. He was the husband of Vivian P. (Clauser) Gruber for 66 years. Born in Allentown, he was a son of the late Franz and Theresa (Thomas) Gruber.

He served the United States Marine Corps during WWII, obtaining the rank of Corporal. He participated in the Okinawa campaign, an air operation against Japan. He was awarded the WWII Victory medal, the American Theatre and Asiatic Pacific Area medal, the Honorable Service button and the Good Conduct medal.

He worked as a division manager at Sears Department Store in Allentown, then in Whitehall for 40 years until retiring.

He loved working in his yard, hunting and fishing, and was proud to have obtained his pilot's license. He was an avid United Way supporter.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son: Scott L. and his wife JoAnn, of Ontelaunee Township; a daughter, Denise R. Weber, of Allentown; a sister, Rose and her husband Carl Schock, of Allentown; and four grandchildren: Elon M. and her husband Nick Stroumbakis, of Wyomissing, Ashley E., of Gaithersburg, Md., Alexander S. and his wife Heather, of Flying Hills and Chantelle M. Weber, of Allentown.

He was predeceased by a brother, Frank; and five sisters, Elsie, Theresa, Arlene, Helen and Josephine.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the American Cancer Society, 3893 Adler Place, Bethlehem, 18017 or to St. Joseph's Indian School, P.O. Box 326 Chamberlain, S.D. 57326.

A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Aug. 6 in the J. S. Burkholder Funeral Home, 16th and Hamilton streets, Allentown. Calling hours will be held 7 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 5 and 9 to 10 a.m. Aug. 6 at the funeral home.
