Widdoss' hot hand leads to win over Rovers
Cameron Widdoss knows what is expected of him this coming season, his final year playing for the Emmaus boys basketball team. Last year as a junior, Widdoss, along with his junior classmates, had a large hand in the leadership category because Tyler Prescott was the lone senior on the team.
Widdoss was doing just that last Thursday night inside Allen High School's gymnasium, leading his Green Hornets team to a 54-36 win against Easton.
Widdoss made four three-pointers and tallied 12 points on the night, while also grabbing a rebound and dishing out an assist. The rising senior worked to get open, and his teammates worked to get the ball in the hot hand.
"I definitely want to look for my shot more," Widdoss said. "That's always something I've done but haven't always been relied upon in the past like I will be this year. This year I'll have the green light a little bit more.
"Losing Tyler [Prescott] is huge, but he was our only senior. This year we have a big class and a lot of guys that will need to take on his leadership role on the court and in the locker room."
After a tie score at 13-13, the Hornets went into halftime on an 8-1 run to lead 21-14.
With Emmaus lead as high as 11 points early in the second half, the Red Rovers fought back to pull within three. Then Widdoss, who had three of his four three-pointers in the second half, along with David Kachelries (13 points, 4 rebounds) and Zach Sabol (6 points, 2 rebounds), extended the lead back to double digits, and the Hornets powered themselves to another summer league win.
"Coach called a timeout because we were shooting a lot of transition threes and a lot of them weren't falling," said Widdoss. "We just needed to work the ball around more and run the offense better. We had to pick it up on defense and play each man better."
Even without starting forward Joey Polczynski, along with Brandon Rapose and Kevin Wambold, Emmaus kept its summer winning ways going.
"When we're at full strength I think we're a great team," said Widdoss. "But even when we're not, like tonight, missing Joey, we beat a good Easton team."
