Brian Leslie Souerwine

Brian Leslie Souerwine, 68, of Macungie, died at St. Luke's VNA Hospice June 18, 2015. He was the husband of Susan (Bauer) Souerwine. Born in Slatington, he was a son of Virginia (Fritzinger) Souerwine and the late Leslie Souerwine.

He was an Eagle Socut and a graduate of Slatington High School. He received his bachelor's degree from Ursinus College, where he ran track, and then earned his master's in education from Lehigh University.

He began teaching social studies at Southern Lehigh High School in 1969, and coached girls basketball. Within the year he began coaching cross country and track and field. He continued to run road races, middle and long distance, but his greatest joy resided in watching his teams grow and develop. Over 45 years he mentored and guided hundreds of athletes. He also volunteered with the Emrey Track and Field Association.

He loved watching his two daughters run, competitively swim and dive, participate in the performing arts and was always willing to volunteer his time and expertise as needed.

In his free time he enjoyed trout fishing and was an active volunteer in Democratic candidate campaigns. In recent years, he enjoyed family vacations exploring ancient ruins in Europe and relaxing in the Caribbean and Ocean City, Md.

He is survived by his wife; daughters, Heidi and her husband Jason Tropp, of Arlington, Va., Gretchen Ann of New York, N.Y.; mother, of Quakertown, formerly of Slatington; brother, Blaine A. and his wife Susan, of Cataula, Ga.; sister-in-law, Nancy and her husband Jerry Schmoyer, of Doylestown; eight nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his father.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Brian Souerwine Track and Field Memorial Fund, Wells Fargo Bank, 7103 Hamilton Blvd., Trexlertown, 18087 or St. Luke's Hospice, VNA, 2455 Black River Road, Bethlehem.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. A memorial gathering with the Southern Lehigh family is planned for a date to be announced in August within the school community.
