Northwestern seniors receive scholarships

Northwestern Lehigh graduatesAlexis Gawelko and Daneen Haas were awarded scholarships from the Lehigh Valley Section of the Society of Women Engineers.

SWE awards scholarships annually to female high school seniors who plan on attending an ABET accredited engineering college and majoring in engineering.

All applicants must submit a copy of their high school transcript including a list of their extracurricular activities, a letter of recommendation, and an essay.

This year, 62 highly qualified candidates from Northeastern Pennsylvania applied for seven scholarships totaling $23,500.

Alexis Gawelko was awarded the Brenntag Scholarship.

Gawelko will be attending Penn State University Schreyer Honors College in August.

While at Northwestern, Gawelko has maintained a 4.0 grade point average.

She also played four years of soccer, two years of basketball and three years of track and field.

She was recently selected as the 2014/2015 Female Colonial League Academic All Star from Northwestern.

Other activities Gawelko participates in include Key Club, vice president; FCCA; Science National Honor Society and National Honor Society.

In 2014, she also served as a Pennsylvania Delegate to the 2014 Washington Youth Summit on the environment and was selected as a Lehigh University High School Scholar.

While at Penn State, she plans to study civil/environmental engineering.

Daneen Haas was awarded the Lutron Electronics Scholarship.

Haas will be attending the University of Pittsburgh in September.

Her Northwestern High school career is highlighted by maintaining a 4.0 grade point average, three years of volleyball, three years of science team, and eight drama productions.

This year, she represented Northwestern at the state Future Business Leaders of America competition and participated on a team that earned an Honorable Mention for the Moody's Math challenge.

She is also involved in chorus; Acapella, president; Friends for Life, president; Science National Honor Society, treasurer; National Honor Society and Girl Scouts.

Haas plans to study chemical engineering at the University of Pittsburgh.
