Gratia Greene Alkire

Gratia Greene Alkire died June 11, 2015, at her Upper Milford Township home. She was the wife of Elbern H. (Ed) Alkire, Jr. for 54 years.

Born in Rochester, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Norbert Dennis Greene and the late Kathryn (Downes) Greene.

She graduated early from Charlotte High School, Rochester to attend Heidelberg College in Tiffin, Ohio on a voice scholarship. Subsequently she attended the Rochester Business Institute and then graduated from the University of Rochester with a degree in general studies (mathematics and mechanical engineering). She also attended Adelphi University for graduate studies in mathematics.

She was recruited by the General Electric Co. to work at the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory in Schenectady, N.Y. She was involved in mathematical studies supporting the design of advanced nuclear submarines for the U.S. Navy and Admiral Hyman Rickover.

After moving to Pennsylvania she was involved in a wide variety of volunteer and creative activities including township planning, environmental activism, Emmaus Garden Club (serving as president), flower arranging, sewing, knitting and oil painting.

She was an early user of computers to manage financial assets and eventually her methods were featured in several magazines for investors and computer buffs. She also started a stock selection publication (The Greene Letter) provided to select clients across the country.

She and her husband enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and Canada, with trips to Europe and Ireland and extensively in Vermont.

As her eyesight began to fail, she established a goal to create a cookbook for the physically handicapped and visually impaired. This led to her founding TIA Publishing and the publication of Easy Elegant Dining, now in use throughout the world. The cookbook is highly regarded by numerous multiple sclerosis U.S. offices, and has received the seal of approval from the National Association for the Visually Handicapped.

Diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at the age of 19, she lived with a sense of urgency that led to a life of extensive activities and accomplishments.

She is survived by her husband; son, Dr. Ti, of Ithaca, N.Y.; brother, Dr. Norbert D. Greene Jr., of Tolland, Conn.

Contributions may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Services are private. Arrangements were made by the Finegan Funeral Home, Easton.
