District installing cameras on vans, school buses
Parkland School District will be installing Internet protocol security cameras on its fleet of 131 school buses and 20 vans.
At the May 19 meeting, the board awarded a bid of $314,958 to ProVision, Byron Center, Mich., for the cameras.
District Superintendent Richard Sniscak commented on the acquisition.
"We have just a few cameras now, but not nearly enough," Sniscak said. "We move them around where needed.
"Now we'll have one on every bus and van in the fleet."
Assistant to the Superintendent for Operations Tracy Smith explained how the images will be handled.
"After the bus returns, we can transmit the camera footage to our servers in the buildings and the head end room at the high school," Smith said.
The system does not allow the images to be viewed elsewhere while the vehicles are in transit.
Smith also reported the district is working on a new GPS feature to provide a location for all buses at any given time.
Payment for the security cameras will come from the Capital Projects Fund.
The board approved extension of a contract with Tustin Mechanical Services for professional maintenance and upkeep of the heating, ventilating and air-conditioning systems in all district buildings.
Cost for the 2015-16 school year will be $153,680.
Also approved by the board were bids totaling $27,980 for furniture and equipment in the new school term.
In other business, they approved Sheri Frederick-Deeb as coordinator of Health Services and Wellness at an annual salary of $95,000.
This is a new position resulting from restructure of the student services department.
Previously, a school nurse in the district, Frederick-Deeb will work at the central administration building.
The board accepted retirements from Susan Markakovits, paraprofessional at Cetronia Elementary School, 27 years of service; Janice Klotzman, administrative assistant at the Troxell building, 20 years; David Tenetylo, custodian at Troxell, 13 years; and Keith Baltsar, teaching assistant at the high school, 10 years.
