Borough grant money already earmarked

With federal and state grant funding drying up for municipalities, the Borough of Northampton appears to still be faring well.

The borough recently announced it received two grants, one a Monroe County casino gaming grant and the other a Northampton County open space grant.

Borough Manager Gene Zarayko confirmed the grants, totaling nearly $90,000, are already earmarked for local projects.

The $38,500 Northampton County open space grant will allow the borough to acquire a tract for additional parking at the Fourth Street Playground & Park.

"We can now move ahead to purchase a lot past Fourth Street," Zarayko said.

The $59,000 grant obtained from Monroe County casino gaming will be utilized for the purchase of a state-of-the-art portable restroom. The restroom will be able to be transported to events across the town.

The borough still receives Community Development Block Grant funding for mandated federal construction of handicapped curbs at intersections.

Borough Community Planner Victor Rodite is the administration's and borough council's point man in applying for grants.
