Borough pool to open for season June 4

The Borough of Northampton will open the municipal pool on Laubach Avenue to the public Thursday, June 4.

The pool in past years opened earlier, but attendance was minimal because of a pattern of cooler weather.

At council's May 14 meeting, it was reported a crew from the public works department completed caulking cracks, as well as painted the pool.

"The project took 75 gallons of paint at a cost of $4,000. It is necessary that we repaint the pool every two years. The chemicals and sunlight bleach the color," borough Manager Gene Zarayko said.

The pool, built in the early 1950s, is one of the oldest in the region.

It will close for the season Aug. 15.

The mid-August closing of the pool results from many of the lifeguards and staff returning to college. High school and college students make up the pool's roster.

In other business, council approved the hiring of summer employees. Those hired are mostly young part-time employees who will be assigned to the public works department or pool maintenance.

"About 90 percent have worked here in the past," Zarayko said.

Numerous requests have been made to the borough from swim organizations that have used the middle school pool in the past, asking permission to use the municipal pool for practice and exercise in the summer.

Councilman Anthony Lopsonzski Jr., building, land and recreation chairman, said pool manager Nate Gillespie will try to fit some of the organizations making the requests into the borough pool's schedule.

Lopsonzski mentioned it appears the middle school pool will be closed for the summer due to demolition.
